Reference standards are useful when the goal is not only instrument calibration, but also method validation, software behaviour, peak-overlap interpretation, detector-window performance, education, or comparison between analytical techniques.

As most of the minerals are natural, they may not be entirely homogeneous, but their diverse concentrations and combinations of elements make them fascinating to analyze.
